K lite codec?
Posted by Mike Hinkel on April 17, 2013 at 4:32 amWhere would one look to see if there is a codec pack installed on your machine? How would you remove it if you find it? I think I might have inadvertently loaded the k-lite codec with a trial of Mercalli.

April 17, 2013 at 10:48 amYea, it should show up in the list of installed programs in your control panel but the bad news is, they don’t always uninstall cleanly so you never quite know if it’s all gone. That’s why we recommend you never install these. They are more like viruses than software.

April 17, 2013 at 2:37 pmI have heard about codec pack issues, and I do have K-lite installed. I have the “standard” one installed. Only playback and only DirectShow installed. Vegas does not use DirectShow.
So exactly what does something like K-lite mess up?
As far as I can tell Vegas directly uses its decode/encode for all file types except for Video for Windows (AVI) and Quicktime (MOV). There are the only mechanisms for installable system wide codecs. DirectShow is a system setup but for players.
K-lite does nothing with Quicktime. I never use VFW AVI so maybe that is why I see no issue.

April 17, 2013 at 4:53 pmIt can lead to big issues Norman, even if you dont see it.
I haven’t the time now to go in depth, but us Pros would not
be advising against it for no reason!Steve Rhoden

That could be. We have documented cases here on the COW of people having problems with K-Lite installed, then uninstalling K-Lite and their problems are gone. Coincidence? I don’t think so since there were several incidents.
What K-Lite and codec paks like it do is blindly replace the codecs on your system with the codecs in the pak. In the process, they overlay the codecs that are shipped and tested with Vegas Pro. Then when their version of the codec doesn’t work, people blame Vegas. If codec paks only added the codecs that your system doesn’t have it wouldn’t be so bad, but the fact that they replace the high quality codecs that you paid Sony good money for with free questionable quality codecs is the real problem.

April 18, 2013 at 4:36 amI don’t see anything other than the installed trial of the proDad Mercalli 3 (SAL) Would the codec within that program still have an effect on Vegas Pro?
I don’t know what to look for in the regedit nor do I really want to go there, but if I must…..All of your help is greatly appreciated.

April 18, 2013 at 11:28 amdoes installing Vegas after installing the codec pack replace those with the high quality ones from Sony ?
a while ago I tested with a fresh and “clean” install of Windows 7 Ultimate 64 and one with the latest K-Lite Codec Pack, installed Vegas Pro 12 afterwards and perform some testing, got same results on both computers, so that’s why I think Sony replaces back the codecs if you install Vegas after the codec pack is already installed.
edit: after some file activity monitoring it seems Vegas Pro 12, contrary to Pro 11, invokes its own codecs installed in a different folder than those for general use installed by Windows or whatever codec pack.

It should. I believe the way it works is that the last one installed “wins”.

I haven’t done any testing but that would be wise of Sony to ignore all the junk codecs that people put on their systems if it’s at all possible.
