I’m currently shooting a bit with a JVC GY-HM100U that I set to save files as .mov. The link below seems to indicate that those files are just fine going to the FCP timeline without transcoding.

    https://pro.jvc.com/prof/attributes/tech_desc.jsp?model_id=MDL101845&feature_id=02

I’ve been reading posts and sites about those shooting with a Canon 5D MK-II, which also saves a .mov file (but likely another codec?) and in those readings I often see experts say the canon produced .mov files should be transcoded to ProRes422 before editing.

The question I have is: If the canon’s should be transcoded, should my JVC created .mov file also be transcoded?

    Thanks in advance,

    Jimmy

The JVC when set to Quicktime makes XDCamEX files which can be edited in FCP.
The Canon5D makes h264 Quicktimes which ought to be transcoded to ProRes first.
you might want to set the render to ProRes in your sequence if you set it up for XDCamEX.
