  • JVC GZ-HD3 Capture (firewire) to Final Cut Pro

    Dear everybody.

I have a macbook pro 17″ (newest generation) with a firewire 800 (9 pins) and a JVC GZ-HD3 camcorder (4 pins). I also have a firewire cable to connect those with each other.

    My problem.
The camera record files (.TOD). There is a way to import this in FCP but this works very slow. FCP crashed a lot (no option for me). I thought ‘capture with firewire like a dv camcorder, and problem solved’, well I can tell you, it doesn’t. FCP didn’t recognized my camera, when I select ‘Log and Capture’ function I got this message.
    —-
    Unable to initialize capture device
Device is not connected or the capture preset is not setup correctly. You may still log offline clips.

This might also happen if you play DV footage in an HDV device.

I’ve searched the web but I couldn’t find anything about it.

    Please could someone help me?

I look forward to your response.

    Bye

P.s. I don’t want to convert files (.TOD > .MOV) the Quality is not very well.

    Hi Ben.
Yes I am still looking for a better way to do this because I convert the files first to Apple Intermediate Codec but this takes a lot of time so I am very curious about the way you do it.

    Regards, Jeroen.

I didn’t get it work yet. This is what I have done.

File > Log and Capture and then I see a window.
I can’t select any presets but FCP recognize my camera. When I play footage on my camera, FCP recognizes it and the stop button moves to the play button. When I pause it FCP moves to the stop button. I don’t see any footage on my screen, it stays black, even when I play footage filmed in 1440CBR mode. Normally I shoot in XP mode but someone told me to try it in 1440CBR.

Could you maybe a little more specific in explaining how to do this.
I use Final cut pro 6.0.6 (belongs to Final cut pro studio 2).

I hope you can help me.
    Thanks.

    Hi Ben.
Thank you very much, this is truly the solution I was looking for, for a long time.

It’s sad that it only works in the 1440CBR mode because all the movies I have shoot are XP but I will convert them and from now on I gonna film in 1440CBR.

Thank you so much. I will vote this answer ‘solution’.

Really nice that you got a new one:)
I’m happy that it finally works. As you can see I have posted this question in January and after a while I have the answer. Again Thanks:)

    Hi
Are you sure your deck doesn’t work at all on your mac or does it work but you don’t see any footage. I have had that with my camera. When i pressed the play button i saw that something changed on my screen but i didn’t saw any frames at all. Make sure your mac recognizes your deck. Maybe you can try to connect it an go to the apple update application. Than you are sure that you have at least all the drivers you need.

I don’t know much about the decks so i cant help you further with this problem but maybe this will work else i hope you can find someone who can help you.

    Good luck!

    Thanks for you response.
There’s no communication between my deck & MAC yet, I’m quite sure about that because when i start final cut it tells me “unable to locate the following external devices: Apple Firewire PAL (720 x 576)”. Still hoping…

What you trying to do now is Batch and Transfer or Log an Transfer maybe you should try the other one. I know that one of those doesn’t worked either in my case.

Also take a look into your Finder window or Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility to find out that your mac recognizes your device. Maybe it does and Final cut doesn’t.

I hope this information helps you, if you think it’s ‘crap’ please tell me, i’m not familiar with this product but this is what i should try.

    Good luck again!

Ben, you are god among men. I have been looking for this exact solution for a very long time. The GZ-HD3 is my disposable back-up camera that I don’t care if it gets broken. No matter how any times I have tried I have not been able to import or capture and most times I rely on mpeg streamclip to covert. Needless to say that is a long and tiresome process with less than mediocre results. I was about to sell the camera when I found this post with your instructions. The secret menu was the key I have been looking for!

Thank you for taking the time to write out these instructions.
