JVC GY-HD250u with HD-sdi port- anyone know a drive system for Uncom HD??
I am getting this cam soon, and jvc makes a 80 gig disc recorder for it which is pretty cool, but it can only write native mpeg 2 hdv via firewire, but it cant handle uncompresed HD 4-2-2 via that HD-sdi port that comes on that cam. Does anyone know about anybody creating a disc recording system that runs on d/c power that can do that? I am hoping someone creates such a system so i can take advantage of that hd-sdi output from the camerahead on that awesome camera. i understnd someone has created a computer system that can do that, but i dont want to lug that around when i shoot!! amazing they figured it out. disc recording is great, soon tape recording on cameras will be a thing of the past. with the current jvc disc recorder, you put footage right into fcp in a second, the signal is much better since its not put onto a tape, and you can backup on tape for safety. this camera is so incredible. it can use nikon f-mount still lenses with special adapter for incredible image quality, the chips are the best 1/3 inch chips that they produce, and so it can gain up to +6 db gain and look pretty damn good, so with f8 chips and 6 db gain, you get decent low light results, not great but better than the 110u camera due to having the very best chips and the 110u gets lesser quality chips. that is part of the reason for the price. this camera is going to revolutionize pro hd when someone creates a disc recording system that will work off of that hd-sdi port. it is easy to carry and travel with this cam. check it out, its like $9k with cheaper fujinon, i am getting the next lens up by fuji for antoher 2k or so for $11k or so plus i am considering that disc recorrder , but its almost $2k adn i think someone will kill that price soon. let me know if anyone knows anything coming down the pike and i will update if i find out anything. anyone know of a good blog or forum, i cant seem to lock into one that is good and not totally speculative. thaks, john

Developed by Fraunhofer, the same folks who brought us MP3, and it works very well. It’s an array of lots of 2.5″ harddisks. We have been using it with a Canon H1, P&S adapter and cine primes, and the quality blew folks away. It came close to Cine Alta under carefully controlled lighting.
But we are talking mucho $$$$ here…

I know that my company considered this camera at one point and were very impressed with it. However you might want to consider what kind of HD lens you will be able to purchase for $3K-5K. A really decent HD lens will sell for tens of thousands. In the price range you are talking about it really is amazing that you can get any lens for that price that proposes to be HD quality. I know that a good (not great) standard definition lens for a betacam camera used to cost around 8-10K or so. Reasonably good lenses in HD are about twice that and up. My JVC rep referred to the lens that JVC sells as a throw-away lens. I saw several tests of cheap HD lenses and observed incredible color abberation indicating that they may have problems with proper (expensive) coatings adn lens elements that prevent that problem. We may well be reaching a point where the real expense in purchasing a camera is in the glass – not the electronics.
As with all things you’ll want to consider the track record of amy company that you are about to spend several thousand dollars with. How have they done in introducing HD products before this one and how have they managed to handle problems that came up?
I suggest that you go tot eh HDV forum and look for comments there as well.

HOw true, how true. It is down right depressing at times. the throw away lens is pretty good for the money, but not very good all the way wide or zoomed all the way out. I have seen my frineds footage with the jvc 110u and tha throw away lens, and it is prety amazing for the money. He is doing a lot of valuable corporate work with it and that crapy lens looks pretty good if you dont push it too wide or too zoomed out. the lens i am looking at is $3500, which is aobut 2k more than the crap lens. apparantly, it is a lot better wide and zoomed out apparantly, but i have not used it. one thing that is amazing is Rendering an hdv program to a 1280 x 720 windows media file progressive. Burn as a data file with 1 mbps or 800k compression and then play it in a HD DVD player onto a HD monitor. It looks amazing, and you can of course duplicate that dvd. i am thinking that as time goes on, i can do this for people and it can play on a consumer HD DVD player when those start selling more widely. But i will be the first to admit that things are sketchy with the video world in such a state of chaos really. I am trying to put out something better than mini dv, and HDV seems to be a lot better but certainly far from perfect. DVCAM shot on like a sony 2/3″ camera seems to be the non-hd affordable pro format right now, but i feel like i dont want to invest a fortune into a 25 bit format, so what does a guy do, buy a panasonic varicam with lens for $50k ?? Or a 2/3″ panasonic AJ-HPX200 for $35k with lens (extremely expensive lens!!!!) what do you suggest? the jvc 250u with the HD-sdi port seems like maybe someone will invent a workable disc recording system ot P2 card system or something. I thought of recording that sdi signal (4-2-2 HD) onto a dvcpro HD recorder, but that is $20k jsut for that, so you might as well get the panasonic AJ-HPX200 for $35k which is also too frickin expensive, so i am back to jvc. Panasonic HD palmcorder with p2 cards seems like a good concept, but i hear its soft, you cant set up the camera like the jvc, so back to square one. again, what do you suggest to do to get beyond SD mini-dv? thanks for the tip, i went to their site and wow, it is awesome, but what is the price? i could not find that. can you tell me what the cost is? I do know that you can record to dvcpro HD tape with mild compresion, but that portable recorder is $20- $25k just for that, so a person might as well buy a panasonic AJ-HPZ 200 or 2000 for $35k with lens (very expensive lens) and have a nice 2/3 inch camera that records to P2. P2 is expensive, but P2 is the choice of broadcasters and it wil get cheaper, and they do work well, just that an 8 gig card holds 8 minutes of HD uncmpressed, so wow, what are the alternatives???
