Just my machine, or typical Apple issue???
I have been having a DVD burner or software issue since I first bought my G5 1.5 years ago, and I’ve been meaning to ask about here for all that time. It seems that when burning DVDs with Toast, about half of the blank DVDs I try to burn to are rejected, and Toast issues a “problem with medium” error message. I do use excellent blank media from Taiyo Yuden that works 100% of the time when I burn to it using Nero on my PC, and in fact, every one of the discs rejected by Toast on the G5 burns perfectly with Nero on the PC. BTW, both MAC and PC use the identical Pioneeer A110 burner.
So, the issue could be caused by Toast, or it could be caused by a DVD hardware issue such as a misaligned laser. I am trying to figure out which of these might be the source of the problem. Does anyone else experience the same problem?

I was using Ritek and had the same issue. I’ve always used very well tested and respected media, so I’m fairly certain thats not the issue.

Humm??? Because the same Pioneer burner is in my PC it seems strange that one could have different capabilites relating to media speed. However, you just made me think of something… Maybe I check with Pioneer to see if I can flash the DVD drive with a newer firmware. In fact, I’ll bet thats the issue…

As I wrote above to Jeremy, I use to use Ritek and had the same issue. My switch to Taiyo Yuden was an attempt to see if the issue was media related. I think there might be a firmware fix, so I’m headed to the Pioneer site now. I’ll let you guys know what happens.

David- That may be your answer. I tried to do the same but my G-5 burner is a Sony and for some reason the firmware update on a Sony burner could not be done on the G-5.

Hmm, the only way to test is either try a different brand of DVD-R or get a different burner. That will narrow down the problem.

David- This was happening to me also. I finally narrowed it down to the speed of the Mac G-5 burner. It was only 4x.
When I put 8x or 16x media in it was rejected. Rather than do a swap out of the burner I bought and 16x external firewire burner for $29 and I can use the faster media.Hope this helps.

I also initially had a problem burning 8x media on my 4x G5 (Sony Drive). I went back to 4x media for awhile, and then, when I could no longer find 4x blanks, tried it again using Ritek discs. I haven’t had a problem since.

I used to have plenty of problems with the Superdrive when I had three different versions of Toast installed. It seems that the problem was that some times I used Toast 5.5, some times the 6 or the 7. I left only one version and now works better,

We have exactly the same problem with our G-5 Quad but not with our dual 2.7. We just took delivery on a MacPro dual 3.0. We’ll keep you posted on that one.

I’d suspect Toast… I have the same burner, and with DVD SP, I’ve never seen it reject a disk of any speed rating…
