WIth any new release some people end up in your position. It is unfortunate and I have found myself there a few times for sure.
I guess the good thing is that you are not too “entrenched” in the new software and if you decided to invest 300bucks in FCP X you could learn it pretty quickly with some excellent training available out there (the one I bought is 99 bucks).
As rafael mentioned, FCP 7 will work on OSX lion and there is nothing preventing you from continuing to use FCP seven for several years into the future.
Coming from AVID (if it was the early days) I remember the software was totally tied to the computer and the OS software version you were on. When Apple went from OS9 to OSX many people continued to use their AVIDs on OS 9 for many many years.
So you might not get ten years out the investment, but you sure could get three and I am sure that will more than cover the cost of the FCP 7 software if you are editing professionally.
