September 3, 2014 at 12:58 amI haven’t used the slow motion function as yet. But, you do have to jump through the hoop with additional add-on to get all the benefits of 4k.

September 3, 2014 at 1:06 pmWait, what’s wrong with Blackmagic Production Camera 4K or the URSA 4K ? The footage looks amazing ! Still trying to find a video test of Mark 3 vs blackmagic.

June 23, 2015 at 12:55 amLove my a7s’, have 2 of them.
Looking at my older projects, I agree that my old 5D3 looked more “cinematic”.
Can anyone help with some setting in camera or post.
Or is it just a case that a7s is stuck with that video look? -

June 24, 2015 at 11:22 pmYou have to film it in Slog2 mode. To get that Cinematic look. Then you need to color grade in DaVinci Resolve or Sony Catalyst products.
Also, I have Final Cut Pro X. But I’m using Sony Vegas Pro soft contrast effect. Their you have it, your film look and you can control the look.
Actually you want to film in the highest and sharpest quality you can get. Then go in post to edit and grade.

June 25, 2015 at 12:43 amThanks Jonathan, appreciate the advice 🙂
I don’t want to shoot SLOG2, are there any setting in PP that your can recommend.
Realise this won’t be as good as SLOG2, but would be a step in the right direction. -

September 21, 2015 at 9:26 amHi Johnny,
I’ve had a 5D Mark III for 3 and a half years now. It definitely isn’t a mistake, it’s still a great camera, excellent image and usability. I would heed Warren’s advice and look into shooting MLRaw. I actually have a Sony FS7 now, so if I want to I can shoot 4K etc.
However, I still find myself shooting some projects on the 5D using ML raw. 14 bit cine DNGs are so so nice to work with, you can tweak your image exactly how you want it. Of course, the files are demanding. You need some hefty processing power, some fast cards (which don’t come cheap) and a fairly large amount of back up to store the files.
The key with the 5D Mark III, if you don’t shoot raw, is shooting with the right settings. Don’t use in-camera sharpening, and try to shoot flat, not necessarily cinestyle, but shoot with a flat enough profile (Saturation at maybe -2 and sharpness at -3 or -4) to allow you to grade the image and sharpen it in post.
If you have the time, money and computing power, go raw, the footage is absolutely stunning, super sharp and so flexible in post. You won’t regret it. I shot this with it last year as my first project using MLRaw, and I was blown away by the results. https://vimeo.com/107738007
