Jumpy Timeline
Okay guys,
I am using a MBP w/ 2GB of RAM with FCP 6.0 and am having major timeline issues. It won’t playback at all. I even moved the RT down to Low and still it won’t playback without crashing. Its my own fault I assume for peaking out my external hard drive. Everything is on a 1.5TB External that is only USB (not firewire of any sorts). The problem was, I did not realize I needed to be keeping the pro res conversion to the clips I was using so everything that I have shot for this project is in a folder titled “Shot Footage” and this includes both the original footage files and the ProRes conversion files. This folder is taking up 1.02 TB of my 1.5TB drive… I know I know… insanity… but how do I fix this now? I am way way way too scared to go through and delete only the ProRes files I am using because editing is not done. I have dumped my Render Files folder which was at 49GB, but still no help… So, please let me know what I need to do, or am I going to have to get firewire?

USB is your problem. If your MBP has an expess card slot post back as there are faster solutions than FireWire. a lot faster…
Otherwise a dual FW 800 array is your fix. CalDigit, iStorage Pro is where I’d start looking. But you need at least a FW drive setup. The removable drive enclosures make sense to many.
Use the media manager to copy the ProRes files to the new setup you buy.

i do apologize bu i am not 100% sure on the express card slot but i am almost positive it does have one… there is a flap on the side of the laptop and i am pretty sure that is what its for.
its the 2.2 mbp core 2 duo 15inch (not the new unibody but the generation before that) -
eSata is faster, and the latest connection is USB 3. CalDigit is shipping a USB 3 setup:https://www.caldigit.com/AVDrive/ But it’s only a single drive… 2TB total capacity. a Dual can be 4.
You use an express card to attach eSATA drives which are considerably faster than FireWire setups.

that looks very exciting and honestly $300 doesn’t seem bad for the 2TB set up… i need to do a bit more research… this is the first i have heard of these… i have been using WD passports for so long knowing that the day of reckoning was awaiting me…
i could probably sell off most of these WD and get the CalDigit AV Drive…
one last question…
to move this current project onto the CalDigit AV Drive would i just simply drag and drop??? is there any danger of losing content or danger of the media not connecting properly once i do that and open the project in FCP from the new CalDigit AV Drive???

and i guess just to be clear here… i could go with the WD My Studio or something like that w/ a Firewire 800 option and still be okay for this project right? I mean it saves money so thats why i ask.

Yes, most any FW 800 drive would be OK, however for a bit more you get a lot more. You should use the Media Manager in FCP to copy the source files from your current project, then it will not only make a solid copy, but the Media Manager will create a new project file all connected to the copies.

so i found out tonight that i do not have esata on my MBP as i had thought so i guess FW 800 will be the way to go

The eSata Connection would be supplied by a card that goes into the express card slot… it’s not standard on any machine… you don’t have this slot? It’s not quite 2 inches wide and on the side of the machine has a door that you can push open with a finger.

lol, well then yes i do have that slot… i thought that was esata and someone told me esata was more like a bloated phone jack so i thought maybe ethernet and esata were the same and then found out that was wrong… but yeah, i do have that slot
