    Hi there,

I’ve been using Cinema 4D for a couple of months now and getting on quite nicely, but I’ve just come across a problem I don’t really understand and can’t solve.

I have two keyframed objects, animating independently. I want to group them together under a single null and then also animate the null. The problem is this. Unless the null is at the origin (0,0,0) the objects appear to jump to a new position – the screen doesn’t update immediately, but waits until the playback head is moved.

This doesn’t happen with non-keyframed objects, regardless of the null’s coordinates.

This isn’t what I’d expect to happen. I’d have thought that the objects would simply have their global coordinates adjusted to coordinates relative to the parent null (much like after effects works with parent layers) What am I doing wrong?

I guess I could create a null at the origin, but that doesn’t help me much if I want the null to describe a rotation or scale around a certain point.

    Thanks if you can help.

    Ben.

What happens is that, when you place an object inside a null, you are essentially putting it into the null’s universe, so if the null is offset from the origin and you put an already-animated object into it, then the child is offset as well. I can’t tell you why that doesn’t happen with non-animated objects … but I’m glad it doesn’t. 🙂

Instead of placing the object inside your null, give your object a constraint tag (character>constraint), set it to parent mode, and reference the null as parent.

Thanks Adam. That sounds like a great idea. I’ll give it a go.
