Jumpy mp4 in Vegas 8
I have used Vegas for years as a keen hobbyist. Vegas 8 is now installed on HP notebook with Centrino Duo, 1 Gig RAM and 350 Gig HDD. I have just purchased a Sony HX1 camera that can record Full HD1080 in mp4.
When I open the mp4 files in Windows Media Player and MPC player, the video and audio plays smoothly without jerks and jumps.
But Nero Showtime, VLC and Sony Vegas 8 are very jumpy. I wonder if it has something to do with the camera recording at 30 fps and that I live in Australia with 25 fps PAL. I have set up my Vegas preferences for playing on PAL TV.I can live without Nero and VLC working smoothly, but I would really like my faithful Vegas to play smoothly.
I need advice from some wise Vegas mentor about how to marry my new Sony HX1 camera to my ‘old’ Sony Vegas 8.

If you have your project set up for PAL and the camera media is 30fps then you are asking Vegas to convert from 30fps to 25fps on-the-fly during playback on a computer that is underpowered for HD which is why it’s jerky. At a minimum, if you really want to work in PAL, I would convert all of the footage to 25fps first (via rendering) and then it should play smoother in your project. Alternately, you could set your project to NTSC and then just render to PAL as a final step.

Thanks John. Rendering mp4 files from Sony HX1 to AVI with Vegas 8 did work to stop jumping, but took much time and trebled size of file.
On the Internet I found ‘Leawo Free AVI Converter’. It does a great job quickly, making similar sized files, of good quality when you choose to convert mp4 to XviD.avi which can then be used in Vegas 8 for editing. Leawo also will convert a batch of files. So it is cheap and helpful work around for Sony camera users who want to use Sony Vegas to edit.
