  • Jumping up frames while capturing

Posted by Yaniv Waisman on July 8, 2009 at 8:36 pm

I am having a strange problem and I can’t seem to find a solution. I have a BetaSP connected to my mac via a Decklink HD card. When I capture or record to the card, a frame jumps up every few seconds.
If I play the tape without FCP’s capture window open, it plays fine.
The deck has been service, the card has been sent to Blackmagic-Design, but still I have no way to understand what is going on or solve this strange situation. I don’t have a genlock box, but I didn’t before when it was playing fine.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    Yaniv

    Hey Yaniv
I just had a similar problem with capture Digi Beta.

What is the codec to which you are capturing it to? Also, what processor do you have?

I have a 8 Core MacPro and was trying to capture uncompress 10 bits from BetaSP

The problem might be your codec. Try capturing at both Apple ProRes and try even DVCPRO50. What happens is that the card can’t process that codec fast enough so it drops frames. Let me know if this works.

I have changed the settings of the capture, and still no luck. What is strange is that if I play the tape without FCP open, it runs fine, as soon as I open the log and capture window the problem starts.

When it drops frames in FCP is dropping at the same points or at different ones? Also, try decreasing the codec even more to maybe DVCPRO. When you change that setting make sure you’re changing it under the capture setting and not device control. Also, when you capture do the “capture now” feature.
Is there an error message that comes up when you drop frames?

    Hi John.
I am not getting drop frames, what I get is a frame that jumps up. So it is strange. I timed yesterday and it is not constant or in the same places. I am starting tho think that there is problem with FCP itself and I might need to reinstall it. I sent the Decklink card to Blackmagic and they tested it. I reinstalled all the drives for the card and I had my deck service. It is not the deck because it plays fine when I don’t have the capture window open, and it is not the deck. Can it be the cable that controls the deck? The RS-422 Connection? I will have to find another cable.
