  judging bokeh – Viewfinder vs. LCD

  I have been looking carefully at bokeh today, evaluating f/stops for a new 50mm lens on my Canon 60D.

  I was surprised to discover that the appearance of bokeh is quite different, depending on whether you are looking through the optical viewfinder or using “Live View,” i.e. the LCD screen on the back of the camera. While this is irrelevant when shooting video, since all we look at while shooting video is the Live View, I thought it was quite puzzling. The bokeh in the actual, shot photograph is exactly what I see on the LCD screen, and much fuzzier (and if you like shallow DOF, it is “better”) than the image I see through the optical viewfinder.

  I’m not dreaming, but I am curious. Any explanations?
