JPEG to PNG Batch conversion
Posted by Joe Mantaratz on December 12, 2008 at 3:41 pmHello Everyone,
In all my reads lately I have seen repeatedly that Vegas prefers PNG files rather than JPEG files. Is there a way to convert them in a batch format? Certainly doing them one by one is not viable option. This could very well alleviate some of the unexplained quirks I have noticed of late. Thanks for all the great help.

December 12, 2008 at 3:53 pmI found a few programs that offer this feature, can you tell me what is the preferred software? Thanks again.

December 12, 2008 at 5:59 pmPhotoshop can do it easily. Just automate an action to save your JPGs as PNGs … you can make PNGs different size, etc….
good luck

December 12, 2008 at 7:11 pmThanks Mike I just downloaded it and did some research on the different formats. PNG was really a replacement for GIFS with the ability for ALPHA channel transparency. (Never knew) I think I’ll touch base with SONY to find out why there would be a preferred format for pics. The only downside that I have come across with PNG files is their size. I have been doing a few projects of late and realized that VEGAS can certainly render any JPEG file it just does not like it in the preview at all. You would think that a 1 meg file would not be a factor. Anyway thanks again.

December 12, 2008 at 7:59 pmSONY doesn’t prefer png, all NLE systems prefer jpg, png, tga.
tif requires an external decoder, which slows down the system. It’s not a “vegas thing” but rather an industry standard.Douglas Spotted Eagle

December 14, 2008 at 5:35 amACDSee Pro is one of the best image management programs out there. Have been using this product since version 3.0. I often use it in conjuction with Vegas, dragging images from the ACDSee Thumbnail browser straight into the Vegas Timeline when Explorer in Vegas is not enough. It is the easiest and fastest program that I have ever used for batch processing, and that includes Photoshop. However, it is not free.

Are you saying there is no advantage to converting to .png?
Thanks

December 14, 2008 at 4:28 pmNo, I’m refuting your suggestion that converting to PNG is a “Sony thing,” when it’s an “all NLE thing.”
No nle performs well with monster pix on the timeline. All NLE’s prefer the above mentioned formats over JPEG. Most NLE’s require an external decode for .tif.Douglas Spotted Eagle

December 14, 2008 at 5:06 pmI deeply apologize. I was not trying to suggest anything. I am a total noob to video editing. I just saw your name, and was trying to check out what you were saying. I apologize if I misunderstood you at all.
I will try to convert all .jpg’s to .png, and see if that helps. I apologize if I upset you in any way.
Thank you very much for your help.
