Jpeg Seq Changed The Resolution
Hey there….there is kind of an irritating issue I noticed here. My composition was apparently too big for AFX CS3 to render into a video. It has 5 HDV GreenScreen Bandmembers on a virtual stage, etc.
Anyways, instead I chose to make a jpeg sequence and the computer appears to be able to handle that. However, the images that came out don’t exactly match the original composition. The funny thing is windows says the images are
1440 by 1080, (the same as the comp and video footage), however the images are suddenly “more squarish like SD TV.” And when I import the footage into the original comp, it doesn’t fit. Like it needs to be stretched out, which distorts it obviously.The export settings were all set to comp size, so I can’t figure it out. Is there a better image file for image sequence renders? Better than Jpeg? What is recommended?

I personally like PSDs. Although they will be larger than JPEGs they are compressed and lossless. They can be easily viewed and even edited in Photoshop. They support embedded color profiles as well as transparency & alpha. JPEGs don’t support any of the above (except that they are compressed heavily).
As for your issue I’m not quite clear on what may have happened. It sounds like there’s some Pixel Aspect Ratio issues that you may be having trouble with. Can you tell us how your footage items are interpreted in AE?

AE probably interpreted the imported JPEGs as square pixel, 1440×1080. This would be fine, but the original HDV (yecch) was 1440×1080, non-square pixel.
You need to re-interpret the JPEGS (file>intepret footage>main) as non-square pixels, using the original pixel aspect ratio, or as 1920×1080 square-pixel images.

You guys are brilliant!! It should almost cost a fee to enjoy this forum. Actually I won’t be able to test these new ideas and theories till another comp finishes rendering in a hour!
I think I will try the PSD file next time I render. Are there any special settings I should choose before it renders?

I believe there is a preset output module for a Photoshop Sequence… If not then you will need to create your own output module.
Another benefit of PSDs that I didn’t mention before was the ability to render to 16bpc or even 32bpc images.
