Jon, when you mentioned slipping your edit point 10 frames when working on a U-matic deck it reminded me of when I first worked on that format. I sometimes had to do 10 wacks or more at one single edit because not only would the machine abort the edit if it was too far off and knew it was not going to make the edit point, but because even if it went through with the edit, it might have been off some frames. For a long time, I worked on 3/4″ without timecode, just control track, and on the old top loaders. But like Scotty in the engine room, I could tell in advance when I listened to the machine, if it was going to make the edit or not because I became so familiar with it after working with it for so long. The guy I worked for back then still has the equipment at his house and I went over there one day after 20 years and saw it set up like it used to be and it was a real flashback experience.
Jon, you seem to be the go-to guy here on the Avid Calf. Lots of good knowledge. You should have your picture up here with me as a host of this site. I’m getting tired of only having Pitzer to look at.
