JOHN ROFANO/ editing avchd 32bit, or 64 operating sys
Posted by Shawn Bossick on August 23, 2009 at 7:39 pmJOHN thank you for resonding, guess im going again to get a new computor my last one is only 8 months old, get a guad core you said, my question is, can I run it on my windows 32 bit, or do I need a 64 bit operating system to run it smooth ? deciding to put a 32 bit operating system, or a 64 bit system, also is there a big difference running a quad core 1333 MHz fsb verses a 1600 MHz fsb

John Rofrano knows about a thousand times more about Vegas than I do, and I have not seen your other thread, as I was offline for a few days. But do you need another computer?
I had a CoreDuo (two core) at 3.0GHz. I upgraded the chip to a Q9650 CoreDuo Quad at 3.0GHz, and everything works fine (especially with Cineform NeoScene).
Not having seen your other thread, is it possible just to upgrade your processor, and add more RAM, and use Cineform NeoScene, and save yourself a lot of money?
The preview window I leave on Draft or Preview setting, but other than that it works fine. All four cores run at 95% without NeoScene, and at +/- 57% with.

August 24, 2009 at 3:27 amNORMAN, thanks for responding, yes I will just upgrade the the processor to a quad core and add more ram, unfortantly I dont know how to build systems, and reley on info to guide me the right way, I have been doing nothing but reading and trying to figure things out, at age 44, Im a 22 year audio vetern 6 years into vegas, what operating system should I go with, I curently have windows xp a 32 bit.

thank you again for responding, do you edit nativly in .MTS, and what is Cineform Neoscene, I was hoping to edit in my native files which for me I have the new Panasonic HMC 150 AVCHD .MTS files ,how expensive of a quad core should I look at, and finaly does any one out there edit with MTS files I”ve read a little about M2t, AND M2TS which vegas sais they support but I havent heard or read anything about vegas users using .MTS do you ?

August 24, 2009 at 4:25 amI think John will give you the definitive answer, but … when I upgraded to 64-bit Vegas, I noticed at least a 15% increase in rendering speed versus a 32-bit version. So, faster processor plus 64-bit should yield a very nice bump in performance for you.

Here is what little I know:
64 bit Windows will allow you to use more ram, and like Tyson said it is a little bit faster (but not a whole lot). Whether or not to go 64 bit is entirely up to you.
Cineform NeoScene is just the best .mts (AVCHD) to .avi converter available. It is $99.00 at https://www.videoguys.com. If you have a Q9650 coreduo quad, you don’t really need it, but it is nice to have, as it ‘relaxes’ the file compression quite a bit (i.e., makes the file larger), which means that the processor does not have to work nearly so hard to uncompress those teentsy-weentsy highly-compressed files in real time on the fly while editing. Since your processor has to work less, playback is less choppy: but my q9650 does the job even with stock .mts (avchd) files.
All you really need is these:

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835100007
Also get coffee filters, and 95% pure rubbing alcohol (to clean off your heat sink or fan). Arctic Silver has instructions online as to how to install their product. Follow them closely. Or you can call a local computer tech to come do it for you for about $35.00 or something (and you can watch). Don’t use too much. It does not take much. Like maybe about a half inch worth of a toothpick. You just want to fill the tiny thin airgap between processor and the heat sink or fan heat sink.
64 bit windows is optional
more ram is optional
q9650 or above (core i7) is a must for AVCHD.
lots of guys use the 150. it is supposed to be excellent.I convert to NeoScene .avi, but for a while I could not get it to work, and i used the native .mts files just fine.
Please let me know if I can be any more help.

Norman did a great job of netting things out. On my QuadCore 2.66GHz the AVCHD from my Sony HDR-CX12 plays shaky for a second or two at the beginning of each clip and then smooths out to 29.976. It’s annoying but tolerable. I’d imagine the Q9650 3.0Ghz Quad that Norman pointed you to would be event better.
If you are not use to building systems, then replacing the CPU is absolutely the hardest thing you could do. I would bring it to someone local who has done it before. It’s not like swapping out a graphics card or hard drive. You really need to be careful applying the thermal paste and seating the heat sink properly. It’s not rocket science but it is tricky (for example sometimes you have to press on the heatsink clamps so hard you’re afraid that you’re going to snap the motherboard into pieces!).
Here are direct responses to your questions:
> my question is, can I run it on my windows 32 bit, or do I need a 64 bit operating system to run it smooth ?
As far as playback, I don’t see much of a difference between running Vegas Pro 9.0 on XP or Vista 64 (I have both). Vista 64 might be a little smoother but they are about the same because it’s the CPU that really makes the difference not the OS as much.
> deciding to put a 32 bit operating system, or a 64 bit system
There is no decision to make. 64 bit is the only way to go. 32 bit is dead. It’s limited to 3.25GB of memory. It’s 20 year old technology. Personally, I would only buy Vista 64 if it had a free upgrade to Windows 7 because Windows 7 64-bit is what you want to be on. It is a much leaner, meaner version of Vista. I’ve already pre-ordered two copies for my machines.
> also is there a big difference running a quad core 1333 MHz fsb verses a 1600 MHz fsb
Faster is always better when it comes to bus speed, but I don’t have two systems to benchmark so I don’t know.

August 24, 2009 at 3:50 pmHi John.
I missed the fact that he had XP. Yes, I agree, more than 3.5 GB of RAM with 32 bit anything is a waste.
If he is going to upgrade to 64 bit, he can also download the Windows 7 Release Candidate for free here:
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter/dd353205.aspx
I think it works free until 6/2010 or something, and he won’t have to reload, just buy the authorization key. I think some guys are already using it (because it is basically just an improved Vista SP2+). If I go to reload my laptop, I think that is the way I will go (unless it makes it to the actual release first).
