  • Job for 3DStroke or Particular… but which?

    Hi all,

    I have a job which requires me to recreate some of those oh-so-over used but ever popular 3d swirly stroke effects; now i know that this can be achieved using both particular (as described in Andrew Kramer’s light streaks tutorial) or by using 3d stroke… I just dont know which is best and deadlines are tight so any pointers up front would be great;

    the strokes I need to recreate need to look like this:

    they look more like 3dstrokes to me… just the smoothness of the curves, tapering etc… but I need to have some control over the paths when i animate them so I thought maybe particular would be easier?

    anyway,

    any pointers much appreciated,

    ta

    Elin

    Off the top of my head, I’d say this looks like a job for Particular, but then again, I barely use 3D Stroke anymore.

    To get smoother curves, you can pre-comp the Particular layer and up the FPS. It’s a bit more of a render-hog, but sometimes for fast-moving paths, it’s the only thing I can get to work. For tapering, I’m not sure what to do except maybe animate the particle size as you go.

    Excessive use of Shine and Starglow still do, though, right? 😉

    Ha. Maybe I should just change that to “Trapcode?”

    Not to go too far OT, but that sig was mainly in response to the numerous designs I’ve seen lately that seem like those effects were added as an after-thought. “I need this to be more awesome. Ah-ha! Particular!”

    hmmm – thanks for the fps tip and the gratuitous, slightly patronising portion of dogma 😉

    Haha. Standard sig. Sorry. Should’ve mentioned it right away in the post.

    No problem – I agree with the sentiment 🙂
