I recently got a 5D Mark2 Canon for the HD video and am editing on my MACPRO 2 x 3GHz Quad-Core with 20GB RAM. The footage looks great but the playback is a bit jittery and if there is a difference in light between cuts, sometimes it will lag. I outputted sequences to quicktime and it looks great. It’s just a pain to edit. I didn’t have this problem with my HDV footage I shot last year. I changed the RT button from Full Quality to Use Playback Settings and that did nothing. I am editing on an internal Terra SATA drive with plenty of hard drive space.

I found this link, but I’m not sure if this is accurate:
For Uncompressed HD, you need a high speed array that can run at at least 200MB/s sustained data rate, but 300MB/s and up is even better. Generally a minimum of 5 drives striped together is the bare minimum required to attain this type of sustained speed, though most folks use 8 or more. SATA and FibreChannel arrays are recommended for Uncompressed editing. In addition to the SATA Array manufacturers listed above, FibreChannel array manufacturers recommended by Cow users include Facilis, Ciprico and Dulce.

If this is accurate, is there a hack I can do to make it better. I’m an experimental filmmaker who’s overbudget as it is.

    Thanks, jim

Search this forum for the answer…this is asked every other day. Type in the camera model in the search field and go.

The short of it…H.264 is NOT an editing codec. You need to convert it to a format that FCP can deal with…one found in the Easy Setup list.

Dave LaRonde: You need to conform the footage to 29.97.

How can one convert the format using the lastest version of compressor, or adobe media encoder, or quicktime pro?
