Jittery credit roll
Posted by Sharon Mullally on July 27, 2005 at 3:14 amI’m using Boris Calligraphy to create a credit roll within FCP. As it rolls, the credits jitter as they cross the scan lines. I’ve done other credit rolls in the same way that don’t have this artifacting.
Is there a formula for making this roll work smoothly?
Thanks.

July 27, 2005 at 9:23 pmFirst of all, White type on a black background is tough to pull off.
Knowing that:Lower the brightness on the white color to 90%
Click the 1:2:1 De-Flicker checkbox.
Use a greater point value than 24
Increase or decrease the speed slightly by lengthening or shortening the clip.Good luck.

July 28, 2005 at 3:14 pmThanks, Kevin. I am using a soft yellow font outlined in black rolling over video that is also not full brightness. The brightness of the font is less than 90% and the blackness of the outline is also softened. The De-flicker check box helps, but it’s still not great. I know there’s something about the mathematical relationship between the size of the font and the scan lines and the duration of the role, but it seems like it’s a crap shoot to get it all working right.

July 29, 2005 at 5:02 amUnfortunately, Title 3D does not let you directly set the number of lines to scroll per second, which you need to do. These should be an even multiple of the field rate, i.e. (in 60Hz systems) 120 lines/sec or 240 lines/sec. So the best you can do is calculate the height of your CG in scanlines, figuring that by default it’ll scroll by that total height plus the height (480 lines) of the screen. Then adjust your duration appropriately to get the speed right. Finally, tweak as needed. Emphasis on the word “tweak”.

https://www.adamwilt.com/Tidbits.html#rollsHope that helps you understand that there is no easy way to roll credits in software. I try to avoid them at all costs. Although it seems that they should be simple things to do, they are one of the most difficult to pull off well in a software based environment.
Just so you know, credit rolls are easily pulled off in the linear world with dedicated hardware boxes called CG’s or Character Generators.
I used to use the old Chyron VP-1 back in the day, but it had limited fonts, speeds and floppy disks the size of a large pizza! However, it least it gave me bullet proof credit rolls every time.
