    Hi all you experts! (hope this flattery helps to get a response)

    I’m not sure if this is the right forum, but I think AE can do the effect I’m after.

    I want to mimic the VFX seen in the movie “The Ring”, where the girl walks with a jittering-like gait. This same effect was recently used in a Mercury Mariner hybrid commercial: https://www.mercuryvehicles.com/extras/tvads.asp

    The commercial was done by “The Brothers Krause” at hydraulx: https://www.hydraulx.com/commercial.php

    I think time-remapping could work, but I’m sure there are subtleties I’m missing. Anyone done anything like this before, and how to approach it? Or maybe Jill Wagner just normally walks this way (just kidding)?

    Time-remapping would do it, but you’d probably want to apply an expression to it rather than manually keyframe it. An expression that would allow you to use a slider to set the skip interval and skip amount would be great, but it’s beyond my abilities at this point.

    Maybe post in the Expressions forum?

    glad you are wanting to achieve that effect. i just made a great pseudo-plugin for after effects, and its free of course. i’m planning to post a tutorial on how to use it.

    In the meantime, Andrew has a Speed Change Tut, here:

    Andrew sets Time Remap keyframes, then slides two together where you want them to speedup. Also grab the ones to the right to keep the following keyframes at the same relative time.

    If you keyframes one cycle of Time Remap (so to speak), so enable Time Remapping, set three keyframes, one at the inpoint, then at 1 sec and a third at 2 sec, then if you drag the third keyframe to the left, leaving it next to the middle keyframe, it will speedup there. Then Delete the Time Remapping keyframe at the end of the comp (so now you only have those three keyframes at the beginning) and add this loop expression to Time Remap:

    loop_out(“offset”,0)

    It adds the values cumulatively so you’ll continues on in time, but they’ll be a speedup every 1 sec.

    I think your better off keyframing the remap-speedup as Andrew does in his tut, so it will match the footage better, but that expression will give you a periodic speedup.

    This methods really messes with the sound, you get a speedup-hiss…

    We’ve been bashing this same topic about over in some FCP forums. The problem isn’t getting the time to remap–that’s easy. The problem is in shooting the footage.

    Our brief experiment is inconclusive but it implies that you must have athletic and very patient talent. We asked a model to walk v-e-r-y slowly, about 1/3 normal speed and simply ramped the footage x3. The effect was kinda creepy. However, it was painfully obvious that, like all good visual effects, the results are directly proportional to the amount of research and planning you do LONG before any camera rolls.

    I hear ya. Athletic and patient talent? What, next you’ll suggest I pay the talent. haha! Well, thanks for the response. This is looking a bit more complicated than I imagined.

    BTW, I think the model in the Mercury commercials is Jill Wagner. I don’t know how patient she was during filming, but she does look plenty athletic to me. raaawwrrr!

    i guess i would like to add my 2 cents of information in regards to this effect, i was watching the making of a scary movie called the messengers and in one scene the kid crawls on the ceiling in that same style and in the making of featurette the technical director stated that it was shot at 6 frames per second and i know that after effects comes with a plug in which can cut frames, so give it a try and let me know if that would work.

    where he has some presets and i believe the name of the plugin that would allow you to do that in AE is posterize time.

    so there you go, hope this helps some.

    My thought about these Car spots has been that they actually shot the talent walking backwards. This would be similar to the crypt scene in Coppola’s Dracula where they had the vampire girl walk backwards up the stairs and then ran it in reverse – same creepy results – less plug in.
