I’ve had Super 8 & 8mm film transferred as DV files. When I try to slow the footage down, the result is very jerky. I’ve tried using the motion tab w/in FC (Motion Blur), Change Speed, Stop Motion Blur filter and have also tried Motion software-Retiming, Compressor & JES Deinterlacer. Does anyone know of any other method for achieving a smooth result? I’m under a pretty urgent deadline so if I can get a quick response, I’d be eternally grateful. Thanks!

When dealing with 24fps, or most likely with Super 8, 18fps, slow motion won’t be smooth. There aren’t that many frames to use to make it smooth. You can try with software, like TWIXTOR…but FCP alone won’t make it smooth.

Right, that’s what I figured. Besides TWIXTOR, is there anything else you can suggest. By the way, thanks very much for responding so quickly, Shane.

Try Compressor. Optical Flow can be very good for some material.

In the Frame Controls set the Rate Conversion to Best, then adjust the duration below.

Thanks for this post. I have been trying Compressor & I’ve already tried what you suggested. It’s worked to some degree but there’s still some jerkiness. If you can think of anything else, can you let me know? This is for a museum exhibit so I have to get this just right. I appreciate your response.

Yeah…I thought Compressor was worth a try before you spent any money…

But for the reasons Shane stated, you will probably need Twixtor to have any hope at this point.
