    No Software Option?
by Jeff Davis on Mar 24, 2010

Is there a way to do this without using metaLAN or Final Share Software?

I hated the days of paying per client as the use of our systems grows/shrinks a month to month basis, and software gets outdated.

REPLY – we no longer use MetaLan. We have found that simple Apple File Sharing works wonderfully – so there is NO SPECIAL SOFTWARE that we use, other than Apple File Sharing. There are no license fees, there is nothing. You just buy the system, and you are ready to go.

You can contact Maxx Digital and ask them more details about it, and they will get me on the phone to answer anything else you need to know (or you can ask right here on Creative Cow, and I will answer all of your questions right here).

Thanks Bob, I saw you at NAB last month and was going to go talk to you but you had a swarm of groupies following you! haha

I just got done reading your machine room, edit room, and build your own san articles. Loved em. Also read Biscardis article on his setup.

I am hoping to do something similar at our post house. I call it the poor man’s San.

I am skeptical of Maxx Digital’s Final Share and GraniteStor as they both do the setup for a fee, and the RAID’s they offer just look like they got them from istoragepro, installed their own drives and repackaged it. I call foul.

I am planning on just buying a switch from small tree and doing the AFP myself. I know how to program each machine to do jumbo packs and connect to a server, the only variable is setting up the switch.

I’m assuming there is a web-interface with the switch to do the programming and it should be something I can do on my own.

Any advice? Is there a guide on how to program a switch with link aggregation for video editing?

    Appreciate you time.
