Here’s a little clock animation I used for the test:

    https://www.speedyshare.com/files/20352086/clock_lagarith.avi

If you don’t have the Lagarith codec, you can get it here:

    https://lags.leetcode.net/codec.html

It’s free and it’s very good BTW for compressing animation with primarily still imagery, this little bastard squished that 5 sec HD animation into 3 Mb while it takes around a gig uncompressed and it’s still loseless. Not as good for the live video, of course.

What I do is drop that on the timeline in Vegas 9.0c, make sure that the project is 1920×1080 25p, and render in to uncompressed 1920×1080@25p with best render settings and what I get looks like this:

Open up to full size to see the jaggies.

Apparently it does not have to do with the codec, I get the same results with the following steps. Here’s the png image I use for the next test (clean, no jaggies):

Drop that on the timeline, make sure the project settings are 1920×1080, progressive, whatever framerate you like; render that to a 5 sec 1920×1080 progressive AVI uncompressed. Mine renders a flawless image. Now drop that into the same project next to the original picture and take two png snapshots of the original still and of the AVI.

What I get is that the still’s snapshot is as perfect as the original, but I get jaggies taking a snapshot of AVI. No resize is involved, all way uncompressed, it must be the same technically, where do the jaggies come from?

Have I gone crazy, or am I missing something? Could anyone repeat those steps?

Maybe a Preview window setting? Is the Preview window set to Best (Full)? I Downloaded your files (thanks – made troubleshooting easy) and was unable to recreate your problem, rendered, reimported and it all looked great. Actually, I was unable to even get an image that looked like yours: Full/Auto looked fine, Half resolution looked worse. It looks suspiciously like interlacing (jaggies on the horizontal, but the vertical is clean), but I wasn’t even able to get a screenie that looked like yours by changing the project to Interlaced.

Thanks for the hints. I’ve figured that out. It definitely has to do with deinterlacing.

If I drop the test file on the timeline and look in the clip properties I can see that Vegas interprets it as “interlaced upper field first” for some reason.

Without changing that, if the project settings have deinterlace method set to “None” or “Blend fields” it renders a nice and smooth image. Perhaps you had your project set to one of these.

If deinterlacing is set to “Interpolate fields” – here come the jaggies.

If I switch the clip’s field order to “None (progressive scan)” Vegas renders it all nice and clean with ANY of the project’s deinterlace options.

As I have learned Vegas does not recognize the field order of a progressive scan AVI thinking that it’s interlaced – that happens even if I drop the AVI just rendered by Vegas with progressive scan option. And if the project settings are set to “interpolate fields” Vegas tries to do some weird stuff.

Gotta be careful to match clips and projects interlace settings in the future.
