jagged edges on fonts
Posted by Danny Perez-triana on November 11, 2011 at 1:28 amHey all, this is a simple-seeming problem that’s been driving me bonkers and stalling the completion of a job.
oddly enough, I’ve never dealt with fonts and text too much in after effects. In CS5.5, any font I choose (helvetica is what i’m going for), the edges come out jagged and bad looking. this happens both in the preview and the final render. I’m using H264 codec for vimeo.
I don’t know much about antialiasing and such in ae but would be really greatful for any advice here.
I’m hoping it’s a simple switch that i’m not familiar with in this interface?
thanks for any advice,
Ignacio

November 11, 2011 at 6:28 amIt could be a pixel aspect ratio or an OpenGL thingy.
Check that OpenGL is not used for rendering.
Oftentimes, folks switch on the Pixel Aspect Ratio correction button which is towards the bottom right side of the Comp Panel. But this only happens during previews and not the final render.
What are the specs for your source files, comp settings and output module settings?
Cheers

November 11, 2011 at 5:29 pmMaybe check that you didn’t accidentally switch the text layer(s) to draft mode. It’s the diagonal line in the layer switches.

November 14, 2011 at 6:32 pmno luck thus far. still getting jagged, budget-looking renders.
tried the differen wire draft modes, open gl isn’t selected in the render.dealing with 1920 X 1080 comp, outputting to an apple pro res file.
if anyone has a clue, it would be much appreciated. Had to leave the job for a couple days so wasn’t able to respond earlier. hope all is well!

November 14, 2011 at 7:51 pmPlease describe the workflow you have with AE’s Text Layer. Include details such as comp size, layer transform properties, precomping (if any), effects and anything else that you may have added into the mix.
Cheers

November 14, 2011 at 8:09 pmthanks for chiming in! I searched previous posts and this seems to be peculiar problem.
but here goes, in CS.5
my comp is small 720 x480. layer is the same, units at pixels,
in the comp window, have it set to full, at 50% (just for the sake of space)
when i render, i’m using apple pro res (hq).
i’m able to get a decent render at 720…, set to best, full in the output module.
in the screen shot you see how it looks in after effects, and to the right is the rendered version.
*( I don’t know if you can open it embedded in the message like this (?) I forgot how to attach in a post.)at this point, my eyes might be getting screwey as far as these lines go. the client keeps complaining after some previous versions that were really jagged so i just want to make it look “sharp” for them.
thanks again
i hope all is well,

November 15, 2011 at 2:32 amYour image isn’t showing up and your workflow description tells me nothing related to exactly how you have applied the text and what you have done to it after applying it.
If you’re keen to get some assistance, the provide the following info:
1) how did you apply the text into the Comp Panel
2) did you apply any effects?
3) did you nest this composition
4) did you apply and transform propertiesCheers

November 15, 2011 at 3:02 pmYour comp is 720×480? But you’re rendering in HD? I’m very confused.
Any chance you could provide a sample project file?– The Great Szalam

November 15, 2011 at 7:14 pmsorry for the confusion across renders.
when i worked in a 720×480 comp, i would render it out at that.
and the same for the 1920×1080. I just did the two to see if it made a difference.in my comp, for now at 720×480, i just created a layer (that is at 720 x480, in ‘pixels’ for units)
I added the effect: basic text.
that is the only effect i have on it,
the text is only scaled to 90%but still jagged,
any ideers?
thanks,
Ignaciodip

November 15, 2011 at 7:20 pm[Ignacio Triana] “I added the effect: basic text. “
HAH! I knew it!
That’s an obsolete effect. Use AE’s Text Tool. It’s that “T” icon in the Toolbox. Check AE Help for more detailed info if you need to. It’s as simple as selecting the Text Tool and clicking in the Comp Panel to type your stuff.
