jagged edges on downconvert
Hi-
I’m using the Kona LHe to downconvert 1080i60 to 525i 29.97. I’ve selected the appropriate settings in the Kona control panel and I’m outputting 525i 29.97 from FCP. It’s getting to my monitor but the edges are very jagged. I feel like I’ve seen this once before and don’t remember how to correct it.
Client is on the way….help!

You leave FCP set up for 1080i HD, only the Kona should be set to 525.

I have left FCP setup in HD. The only thing I changed was the Video Playback to 525. If I don’t do that the card keeps reverting back to 1080.

Here may be the issue but still no fix. When I play down my footage the frame buffer in Kona CP says YUV-8b but when I make the CP hot it changes to RGBA. Is this correct? What am I missing here????

Ok, you don’t have the card set up correctly.
Again, LEAVE Final Cut Pro set up in 1080i HD. DO NOT change that.
Click on the Kona Control Panel.
Click on the Control Tab
Primary should be set to 1080i
Secondary should be set to 525.
Click on the output tab you want to downconvert.
Select Secondary 525.
Now go back to Final Cut Pro.
This is the correct way to use the Control Panel. NEVER use Final Cut Pro to do any sort of conversions. You leave that set up in the Primary format.

Yes. When FCP has control over the Kona, it’s outputting YUV. When it doesn’t, the frame buffer goes to RGB.
This won’t effect anything.

I’ve had this same problem with transcoded RED footage. We transcoded to AJA Kona Apple Pro Res 422 HQ 23.98, I setup the FCP timeline as such, go into Kona, and make primary 1080psf23.98, and secondary 525i 23.98, and presto, jagged lines everywhere. What could I possibly have setup wrong? I leave FCP in HD @ 1080 23.98 and let Kona do the converting, only it ain’t looking good. Any ideas?

This needs to be 525i 29.97 and not 525 23.98. 525 23.98 is just an intermediary format and won’t be displayed on a monitor.
