Jagged edges in preview and export CS3
Hello,
My apologize if this has been posted already but i have a problem with the video in my adobe premiere CS3.
In the preview window of premiere, any edges that are diagonal seem to have jagged edges. almost like steps if the angle is great enough. at first i thought this was only in my preview window, but when i exported it to Microsoft DV AVI, it shows up exactly the same.
I was told it was probably something in that adobe was only reading every other frame and because of the interlacing, the edges where unable to smooth out. so i am hoping there is a setting i am missing to fix this problem.

here is a list of things that could cause (or prevent the cause) of. so you can be clear on things i have done.
– The copy of adobe is CS3 Master (owned, not bootlegged)
– The problem happens on multiple computers when loading the same project.
– The source files seem to be visually fine, the problem is only visible once it is in premiere
– we shot using two completely different cameras (only one scene actually was with a second camera) and the problem occurs across all footage.
– no special effects from any other program (video) just straight editing and some color correction all done in Premiere.
– project was set up standard def wide screen 29.98 (or what ever the number)
– some of the video is enlarged to cut out objects on screen and or letter boxed. (but problem occurs across all footage.)thanks for you time and if there is any more info, please ask, i need to get this resolved soon.

Well, DV HAS jagged edges. Sitting too long in front of an HD timeline did that to me the other day too…
But serioulsy, what about the source. Say playing back in Windows media, is it the same? I bet it is. Can you post a still ?

Playing the source files back in windows media everything looks fine. playing an exported avi, everything is jagged. The picture i uploaded is a rendered one from premiere (well i would have if i where not an idiot and knew how to upload a picture), i tried to print screen windows media player but it just puts a black screen where the video was.

All right, can you try exporting a frame first? Then try an uncompressed export. Just remember that you are recompressing when you export to DV unless your footage is untouched. (no color correction, resizing, etc…)
BTW, you can make a screen cap in XP by hitting the Pprint Screen key on your keyboard. Then open a program like Photoshop and hit Ctrl+V, that will paste the capture. In Vista, there’s a screen cap program called the Snipping tool in Accessories.

The one with the black screen is what happened when i tried to do a screen capture. the other one, you can see the jagged edges on the top of the light post and the roof line of the house.

Immediately I can tell you that this ‘bad’ image has been deinterlaced. Meaning the clip has lost half of it’s information. I couldn’t see your ‘good’ image… blank media player. But it is obvious there has been deinterlacing on your output. Check your export settings. Or don’t deinterlace the clip in the timeline. You will see…the interlacing which looks like wiggly lines, that will not show up on a TV. This is the way Video looks if it’s recorded in an interlaced format.
