I use the J3/902 model and yes it has RS-422 control. It works perfectly and far cheaper than any other ingest machine you can purchase for all these formats in one. Some folks complain it’s a bit slow to get started when you first insert a tape. I could care less since it works perfectly, has SDI output and saves me a ton of money.

hey walter,

thanks for that, I’ve been warned off the J30 by some people as saying it’s not up to the job for NLE use, issues with timecode accuracy etc… have you had any timecode drift issues on ingest?

i just need to hire one to suck in 70 odd hours of digibeta – it just made more sense cost-wise for a longer term hire than a fully fledged studio model, which i wont need until the end of the job for the final masters.

also it will be a job for multicam so i’m thinking having accurate timecode is going to be vital for syncing up all the cameras.

Not that I’ve seen in over two years of running it. Most folks who “warn off others” on the J series are those who run the full blown DigiBeta decks. The J series is a workhorse and I’ve recommended it to other folks and it has worked out so well, I’m considering the JH-3 for HDCAM ingest.

A friend compared it with a higher end Digibeta Deck and said the SDI Video quality was not as good on the J series. When he took the issue up with Sony they said something like “what do you expect for the price”.

It’s digital information so I’m not sure how an SDI signal can be better on one machine over the other.

I’ve never had a project kicked back due to any issues with image quality from anything captured via the J3. Take that for what you will.

what is meant by the term “remote control accuracy”. if that means its a bit sluggish or whatever then that’s fine – if it’s talking about something much deeper ie non accurate RS422 control etc then that could be an issue.

I’m happy to hear of your good experience with the deck walter but am slightly troubled as to what is being alluded too in the above quote.

Note that it says “Linear Editing system” NOT non-linear editing system. This means that it won’t accurately edit off the same frame over repeated edits via an Edit Controller, like a CMX, Axial, Grass Valley, etc…

With Non-Linear ingest, you’re not editing from the deck to another deck, you’re simply capturing footage.

I would never use a J3 in a Linear suite as I don’t think it would hold up to the constant jogging / shuttling / cueing process required in a linear suite. With non-linear, it’s not abused as badly.

I still remember when a Grass 200 with an Abekas A-53 running off a CMX-3600 was the ultimate to edit with. My favorite suite was actually an Accom Axial 2020 with a Philips Diamond Digital Switcher, woooooo that thing was just sweet to run.
