  • I’ve lost my timeline, help?????

Posted by Nash on May 8, 2005 at 10:18 pm

Hi, I am cutting a feature on FCP4, pretty familiar with program, but yesterday accidently dumped some footage into the trash causing a lot of the timeline to go offline. Since then, my time line will not appear. I’ve tried double clicking on the sequence, but it won’t bring my timeline up on the monitor, any help would be great. Nash

  • Look up your project name in the “AutoSave Vault” and open the last saved version.

    Couple things to try:

    1. Type cmd-3.

    2. Go to menu Window>Arrange and set to standard or dual screen (whichever’s applicable)

    3. If neither of these help, try duplicating the sequence in the bin and see if the new sequence behaves itself.

    Good luck.

BTW, if you do use the Autosave version, make sure you duplicate it, rename it to the original project name and replace the former version with it in the correct directory (folder). If you don’t do this FCP will create a whole new set of folders for capture scratch and renders PLUS if you don’t remove the Autosave created file name, FCP will automatically delete the project when its time is up. Can be very upsetting after you’ve worked on it for a day!

A fast, easier way to do this is to just open the Autosave files, drag only the latest SEQUENCE from THAT version right into your oprn ORIGINAL project file (I rename this “new” sequence slightly so I can identify it) and then just close the “auto-save” file back up.

You can continue on using the newly-imported timeline. As it will become a part of your “original” project the next time you save it (which should be IMMEDIATELY.)

Good point Matte, didn’t mean to argue.

I just had a picture of Nash working on the back, only to have it pop into nothingness a day or so later.
