ITV TV channel bumper auto colour change
Hi all, long time reader, first time poster here. Please let me know if i have missed anything in my post.
I am trying to create an effect where my shape layers auto colour change to represent the colours that sit behind them in a video ( i am using a video background that sits behind my shape layers). Similar to how ITV have their lettering changing colours to represent the colours in the video.
I have manually done this, but wondering if their is an expression or effect that can do this automatically?

I think what you want is the ‘sample image’ expression. Sample the BG in a few places and link that data to some fills

to expand, effects and presets, search for sample image expression, apply to BG layer, then link sampled colour output to your text fill and the centre to your text position

Thank you for your help 🙂 I tried what you said but no luck. I’m not too advanced with after effects. Would you mind giving me a step by step please?
Aso, I don’t have text layers. I have 5 individual shape layers with fill colour on each one.
I then have a video background of which I want each shape layer to sample colours from as the video is moving. So the shape layers colours will change based on what part of the video is behind it.
Happy to provide a screenshot of anything if you need it.

This is how sampleImage works. http://www.motionscript.com/design-guide/sample-image.html
Apply the sampleImage expression to the color of your shape. It will use the position, or where your anchor point is, to determine the pixels to sample.

ok, so in the latest version of AE at least, this expression is less than predictable (at least the one from effects and presets, you can create your own using the function in the expression editor)

So, take footage, add the sample expression effect. Have your layers in comp with a fill effect. Add a null, make sure the null is at the same point as the layer you want to effect FIRST. attach sample expression position to the null. Then attach null position to your shape layer position(using the expression pick whip not parenting), then pick whip fill to the sample expression colour. should work. Then repeat, duplicating footage layer(can’t have more than one sample layer expression per footage layer I find)

Hopefully this helps demonstrate it. You can move the shape layer wherever you want and it will sample the pixels corresponding to the “target”.
