I want to erase a portion of a clip, which I will have to do frame by frame. How do I ensure that the clip will be transparent where I use the erase tool and thus expose the underlying layer?
Also, how do I paint (or in this case erase) by field?

You could make a new comp filled with a white solid, and then paint black strokes over that white solid until the frame is totally black (the black strokes are your eraser), and then apply that new comp to your footage as an alpha channel. I not farmiliar with the eraser, so I’m not sure about the eraser itself, but this should work.

Try separating fields for the clip (file>interpret footage>main) then drag the clip into a comp that has its frame rate twice that of the clip. e.g. for a 29.97 fps clip, drag it into a 59.94 fps comp. This will reveal the fields and allow you to roto each field.
Then you render that comp at 29.97 with fields.

Didn’t it occur to anyone at Adobe that most interlaced footage NEEDS to be deinterlaced for accuracy in rotoscoping?
Why no audtomatic procedure, or at the very least a keystroke that toggles between fields? Is rotoscoping so rare in interlaced video?
