As an editor and a customer of iStockphoto.com, I have a serious problem with their business practices. I purchased credits from them a while back, only to find that the credits I paid CASH for will expire if unused in a year. This is illegal in California, but they claim because they are in Canada this practice is legal. Regardless, I’m amazed they can get away with it.

So a question… do you have any recommendations for a place for stock photos and video that operates with better business practices? Thanks in advance.

    Mark,

I have to say, at iStockPhoto’s quality and prices, your beef is pretty weak. We use them almost daily, and we just buy what we need, it takes about two seconds.

There are a few other sources, Bigstock comes to mind, and clipart.com has some photos, and it’s just a yearly fee.

    Have a wonderful day.

I work in a corporate environment. It’s a royal pain to buy one-offs each time I need something. Buying a bunch of credits works much better in my environment.

I’m sure it works well for you, but you make the mistake of thinking everyone else works the same way. It’s a bad practice to make credits you use cash to purchase expire. They shouldn’t sell credits like this if they don’t expect people to use them this way.

It says this right on the form before you purchase the credits. I don’t have a problem with it since they are right up front with that.

If you really want to go anywhere with this, just contact the Attorney General for the state of california and file a complaint.

Besides, they now offer subscription based service too if you would rather.

You might also want to visit Pond5 for footage (they don’t have stills, just video). They’ve got over 40,000 clips online and growing fast.

Ben there too, what I used to do to get around that for things like this is buy it myself and turn ’em in with my expense report, but you have your own style.

    Have a wonderful day.

Part of the problem is I didn’t read it… one of my employees purchased the credits.

It just seems like a bad business practice, and one that is illegal in many US states.

Anyway, thanks for letting me whine a little. Frankly, I won’t renew, I find it really bad form… just my opinion of course. But I’ve found some other resources that will work for me.
