Issues with the AJA io HD
Posted by Thomas Frank on March 17, 2009 at 9:37 amWe are having this issue on all our edit stations.
The configuration is:
Final Cut Studio 2 (up to date)
Mac Pro
Dual 30″ Cinema
AJA io HD
Panasonic DVCPRO HD AJ-HD 1400 DeckWhen we have both the AJA box and the Panasonic up running (Firewire)
Final Cut Pro ether crashes on the startup or when pulling up the Capture window.
Also Final Cut Pro is really slow when it does not crash.
We have noticed if you power one of the devices down FCP runs fine.AJA couldn’t help us on this issue maybe somebody her had the same problem??
Right now I am going to replace the AJA boxes with Krona cards to see if that fixes the issue.
Thanks

March 17, 2009 at 10:58 amThe ioHD need a full FW800 bus for working.
You can not plug any other FW device in the same bus.
I don’t know your Mac Pro how many buses have.
Think that two FW connexion doesn’t means two FW buses.
I think that installing a FW800 card should work.

“Correct. You cannot have two video devices connected to FCP via Firewire at the same time. Both the Panny and the AJA Io HD are Firewire Video Devices.
The 1400 should be connected via RS-422 and SDI to the IoHD for digitizing and layback to tape.

March 19, 2009 at 7:35 amThanks for the quick reply!
Final Cut Pro should have no issues talking to the deck over RS-422, right?I am not even sure if we really have a need for the ioHD at the moment…
We receive all our footage over miniDV (at the moment) or over a media server.Maybe if somebody has a chance they can describe me what I can do with the AJA ioHD except for importing and exporting HD and SD formats material over Firewire port… …or compared to a capture card.
I am more a Black Magic guy :o)Thanks!
P.S. Walter could I get in touch with you about configuring and building edit stations?

No, that’s the best way to drive the 1400.

Upconversion, cross conversion, down conversion, capture to ProRes via the box instead of processors, etc… http://www.aja.com and look at the Io HD specs. It’s all there.

March 26, 2009 at 2:00 pmHey okay we have them talking now! :o)
But for some reason we can’t get the Capture format right.
There is a black border around the NTSC DV footage and the SDI 1 input signal is showing 1080i 29.97 (playing is NTSC DV).
in FCP we have the Device set to AJA IoHD 59.94 DVCPro Panasonic VTR
Capture AJA IoHD 529 29.97 DV (With a black border around it)
any other format will show a distorted image.Oh yeah it shows up like that in the FCP capture screen as well in on our output Monitor.
Shouldn’t the AJA recognize the incoming signal or change the format?

“It does – look in the IoHD control panel the inbound signal is on the left
– FCP is not smart enough to change any external device.“But for some reason we can’t get the Capture format right.”
the capture format should be set using an EASY SETUP.it should say something AJA IoHD 525 29.97 ProRes HQ. ( or whatever your capture format should be)

March 26, 2009 at 7:25 pmhey thanks, we had final cut pro ussing every format there is.
Also in the aja control panel (input tab) we can’t find a option to change the SDI 1 input from 1080 to something else. -

You can’t- that input is showing you what the incoming video signal is you would have to change that at the source to have it be something different.
To change the input from SDI1 to anything else – click on any input and hold down the right mouse button or the control key to be able to change to any other input (analog, HDMI SDI2)

March 26, 2009 at 9:25 pmGary thanks for the quick responce!
Yeah that is what I meant the should recognize the NTSC footage from the Panasonic Deck.
Her is the funny thing, we have two edit stations with the same setup.
On the other it works fine with the same miniDV tape??? -
