issues exporting progressive footage to quicktime
I am trying to get to grips with exporting from Avid Express. I’ve edited some 16:9 footage shot progressive on a canon xl2 – I then captured to my pc using my consumer camcorder. After editing, the footage looks great in AVID but when I export to Quicktime movie and play it back on my PC it looks really bad. It looks like it’s having interlacing issues – there are tiny lines appearing whenever there is movement in the image. I’ve tried exporting using various codecs. I’ve tried to de-interlace and i’ve tried exporting to progressive and to interlaced but the image always looks exactly the same. any ideas where i’m going wrong?

My guess (I don’t use progressive footage) was how you captured it. I’m guessing the way you captured the footage (using a comsumer camcorder) started the problem. I’m thinking your camcorder isn’t sending the progressive information, or maybe Avid isn’t recognizing it as such… Did you use Avid to capture the footage, or did you use a different program?
Is there anyway you redigitize using the XL2?
Are you working in a progressive project within Avid?
What is your destination format? If it’s DVD, continue with the process and look at it on a TV and a computer. See if it clears up.

thanks – I’m trying to avoid redigitising with the XL2, because I’ve finished the edit and don’t want to start all over again.
I used Avid to capture the footage.
I am working in progressive on Avid
I will try looking at it on tv as you suggested and see what it looks like – DVD is my target end product.
It’s driving me nuts trying to figure this out. I should have tested my workflow before starting the edit. Lesson learned there.
