  • Issue with mask modes and blending

I’m having issues with mask modes and blending.

I have a composition with two text layers. One is the regular text and the other is a the glow for the text that has a blending mode set to Overlay for the whole layer.

I then have a mask applied to that composition. I also have Collapse Transformations turned on for that comp so that the glow effect on that layer will come through.

The problem is, when I apply the mask, the Overlay blending mode from that layer doesn’t come through…it’s like Collapse Transformations is ignored.

So, I looked at the mask mode (which is set to Add by default) and if I change it to None, then the Overlay blending mode comes through…but I also loose the mask that I need.

I’ve attached two images below showing how the text looks with and without the mask.

Any ideas how to get the layer blending modes from the composition to come through when using a mask?

    No 3D. Everything is 2D.

The mask is used to reveal the text as the door opens (see those image links).

Sorry I didn’t give more info…just not sure what exactly people need to know.

Just tried that…using a solid as a track matte has the same effect of killing the blending mode of the glow.

I think this is the problem your running into?
    From adobe-

When a closed mask (with mask mode other than None), a layer style, or an effect is applied to a nested composition with collapsed transformations, the layers in the nested composition are first rendered on their own, then masks and effects are applied, and then the result is composited into the main composition. This rendering order means that the blending modes of the nested layers are not applied to any underlying layers in the main composition, and that 3D layers above and below the collapsed layer cannot intersect or cast shadows on each other.

The easiest way to get around it is as Dave says and leave them in the main comp.
parent them to a null if you need simultaneous movement.
