isolating lights
Posted by Vicn on August 10, 2006 at 8:47 amIs there a way to set a light to only affect a specific layer? Or a layer to only react to a specific light? I have a lot of objects that i want to cast shadows on, i’d like to add several lights for total shadow control but that results in a totally blown out scene.

August 10, 2006 at 8:09 pmI was wondering the same thing too. In Maya you can light link to objects that would be handy in AE.
The only way I think to do this is to precompose your layers. Make sure you set up your layer with the proper lighting then pre compose, then bring that layer into your main comp then repeat as aften as you need to then your main comp would consist of many pre composed layers.
There may be a better answer out there, I just figured since I’m curious about this I would ask as well.

August 10, 2006 at 8:46 pmI know that you can turn off the “accepts lights” in the material options, but that may be too extreme for what you’re needing. Playing in the other material settings may help with the “blowout” problem (like turning “metal” down?

August 11, 2006 at 8:38 amWhat a pain.. thanks for the input guys, playing with the material settings doesn’t help much, and i’ve got many many layers here that need separate lights and shadows. Im gonna end up lighting each layer separately and faking the shadows. Sucks, but it’s taking too long to precomp each layer, each precomp would need a copy of the camera, that’s about 25 cameras to apply adjustments to..
For those who are having similar problems: I’ve found that using spots instead of point lights helps a little since it restricts the light angle. but it doesnt solve the problem completely.
AE’s lights aren’t raytracers, so i guess you cant expect too much. From now on, when i do 3d work im gonna just stay in the 3d app….
