  • Is Vegas Studio 6.0 Movie Studio worth the effort for 10 min. doc?

Could someone please coach me on whether it is worth my time to use “Vegas Movie Studio Plus DVD” (6.0) to edit a pretty large home documentary? I am a professional producer/editor used to using pro editing software/hardware, so, this is working backwards a little for me. I’m used to full external monitoring (a/v), file management, hardware acceleration and lots of extra tracks. My interest in doing this project at home is to spend the time at home, not at work doing it after hours.
My PC is a Sony Vaio Pentium 4 2.5GHz with just the motherboard 82845G graphics and no PCI-E slots to upgrade with. I have 1394, so, I can input/output firewire and monitor on an NTSC monitor, so, the basics are there. Will this product work with hours of raw footage, a 10 minute or so final duration and will I be able to organize it well enough into bins, etc?
Also, I’ll need extra drive space and wanted advice on whether a simple USD external 7200RPM drive will do for mostly two track, fade/dissolve editing.

Thanks very much for your help on this!

Yes, it will work fine. The Movie Studio version is limited to 4 video tracks and 4 audio tracks but is amazingly full featured. However, for all the Vegas features, you’ll need the full version.

Thanks, Ed! Wasn’t sure if your response/post included my second question on the USB drive:

“Also, I’ll need extra drive space and wanted advice on whether a simple USD external 7200RPM drive will do for mostly two track, fade/dissolve editing.”

Thanks for confirming this Q, too.

[jdwilkin] “wanted advice on whether a simple USD [sic] external 7200RPM drive will do for mostly two track, fade/dissolve editing.””

You don’t say what format you are working with, but for DV or HDV, that would be fine.

Yes, I’ll just work in DV for this low key project. Wasn’t sure if using an external USB drive would slow down Vegas much or not. Thanks Ed and Gary for the direction!
