  • Is upgrade MacBook memory or graphics better for After Effects?

If I had to pick one, should I upgrade my new MacBook’s memory or graphics for professional After Effects use? (see attached pic)

    I’d choose RAM!

Ae is using the graphics card more and more with each release, but its reliance on RAM is still much higher than its reliance on the GPU.

Buy your 64GB of RAM 3rd party and you’ll save a bundle. But yes, definitely RAM.

More RAM and a better CPU would do much more for you in AE than a better GPU would.

Really? Can you buy third-party RAM for MAcBook Pros???

From the pic it doesn’t look like I would get much of a CPU upgrade for $200. Only point-two ghz. What do you think??

Some MacBook Pros say that the memory is not user-upgradeable, but as long as it isn’t soldered in place, it is upgradeable. I’d recommend a mac professional install it, but you can usually have one get your RAM from a vendor they trust and install it for less than Apple charges. Maybe you don’t find it worth the hassle or risk, and that’s understandable.

I would save the $200 on the processor. That difference is negligible, especially when comparing same generation chips. Cores matter (think of them as separate processing units) and it is the same cores either way, so I’d save the $200 and put into RAM, which will be your biggest bang for the buck in the given scenario.

I think, if it were me, I’d want every bit of horsepower I could get in the place that matters most.
