June 16, 2006 at 3:13 amSure. Why do you ask?
These things work, the only limitation is that you have to have access to the back of the computer…

June 16, 2006 at 5:04 amWow! I thought the only options were a G4 Laptop ($1000) a P2 Store ($1600) or one of those 5 slot Panasonic card readers that was like ($2500). So if I used one of these to copy P2 cards to a PC would I be able to copy them to a FW drive and then bring that drive to a Mac with FCP for editing? It seems to good to be true. Thanks for the reply. J.

You should confirm that this PCI card will work with a G5 desktop Mac first.
Not certain it will.

Yes you could do exactly that. We’ve been using a PC laptop to copy the cards over to FAT32 FW drives, and then edit on the Mac. Works just fine.
Having a $70 card reader instead of a $4,000 deck is one of the advantages of the P2 system. P2 is designed around leveraging cheap, universal, existing computer hardware instead of proprietary video hardware. You can use a $399 PC laptop in the field to offload cards instead of a $2500 slot reader as well.

June 17, 2006 at 10:41 pmI emailed Specialized Communications and was told it was not compatible with the G5 (or any Mac for that matter).
Buy the ticket, take the ride.
