  • Is this possible in after effects?

Ok, so i have stationery camera on a tripod with a black background and a dancer moving across frame. The dancer is lit up like a rainbow using an off camera stage light setup.

What i am trying to do in after effects is have the dancer move normally from end frame to end frame but have the light that is reflecting from her body leave a trail on the background.

Can this be done in after effects and if yes how?

P.S. echo seems to leave to much of the dancers structure when i am only after the light trail.

    Thank you in advance.

Try pre-composing a copy of the dancer so that you add colour correction effects and blurs. Then apply the echo to this. It should be a lot less solid.

you can also use blending modes on the precomposed layer. Something like “screen” will leave only the bright parts of the image. You can use a levels or curves effect to crush the shadows and get rid of everything except the projections.
