I have a complete program that I need to make a ‘shorter’ version.
So I duplicate the sequence and cut out pieces I don’t want.

As it is going into audio post I want to use the main program to do the full mix and then replicate the cutdown I did in FCP so I don’t have to mix it twice.

My technique in FCP is to ‘nest’ the original sequence on top of the new copied sequence, disable it AND disable the track that it sits on.

Then when I do the cutdown the nested sequence gets chopped along with all the timeline components and then I export an EDL of just the vision track that has the nest. This EDL is used in audio post to tell me where to chop out the unrequired portions for the ‘shorter’ version. All the above works flawlessly but here is where I have problems…

I then need to export both versions separately to HDCAM. With the longer version I pre-render the timeline and it immediately edits to tape when I hit all the right buttons. But when I get to the shorter version I also pre-render the timeline but when I go to edit it to tape it wants to do a 30 min render again!

What I have found is that if I DELETE the disabled NEST track (which is also disabled) it doesn’t need to do the 30 min render again.

As I said earlier, the nest is disabled AND so is the track; so doesn’t that mean that it is not required? And if I tell FCP to render all after it has been render FCP flashes up the render box and closes it indicating that nothing needs rendering; but ‘edit to tape’ thinks differently…

In conclusion; if a sequence has a disabled nest sitting in there FCP thinks everything needs rendering when doing and edit to tape.

    any thoughts?

What would I do without the ‘UNDO’ button!!!!

I think it’s a normal operation bug. It seems that if you have any clip disabled in your timeline, FCP will re-render the whole timeline. I don’t think it has to do with disabled nests only, just disabled clips.

    Good job catching it.

iI would strongly recommend that any true replicatable bugs are reported directly to Apple’s bug tracking system rather than the usual less than endearing “feedback” page … with the feedback page you are reporting into a black hole whereas with the bug tracking program you can solicit updates on the status of your bug.

Apples bug reporting page is here:
    https://radar.apple.com

Guys and girls, I hesitate to add this as I’m sure we are all professionals, but PLEASE don’t abuse this. if you have isolated a true bug that can be replicated under controlled circumstance (ie its not just on your installation and its not a feature request) then this is a very good place to report it to ensure that the engineers will see and act on the report. This isn’t the place to send in a rant!

You will need a basic ADC account (Apple Developer Connection), the free one will do!
Make sure to follow the guidelines on how to format your bug report so that the engineers can isolate the issue.

Very nice Andy. I had no idea the general public had access to Radar.

[Andy Mees] “This isn’t the place to send in a rant!”

I have re-read my post and didn’t see a rant so I hope you were just generalising there. But my post was a question which Jeremy tried to answer with “I think it’s a normal operation bug”. That seems to be the reply a politician would make.

But if someone could confirm to me that it is a likely bug I will report it as I have with other bugs in the past. But first I have got to get the log in to work; all I get is “An error has occurred. Please report the error to Apple Inc. by emailing the error detail to devbugs@apple.com.”

So now I have to log a bug report about not being able to log a bug report – isn’t this a crazy world we live in.

I am laughing out loud. Hilarious.

I think Andy was saying that you shouldn’t rant on the radar. That’s all.

I wonder what happens when the bug report of the bug report fails…
