I’m considering purchasing the HVX-200 now. Does anyone have the 411 on what might be coming onto the market within the next year? There’s always some buyer’s remorse when the next greatest technology ships, but generally speaking, is this a good time to buy? I missed NAB and haven’t really found anything on the net (other than RED which is out of my price range). One thing I might do is get a Firestore instead of a couple of 16GB P2 cards. So when the price of the 32MB cards come down I can nab a couple of those.

That’s a very broad question. There are always cameras on the way and anyone who knows what’s unannounced for next year’s NAB would be violating an NDA to life the veil. I always say don’t buy a camera until you really need it. Then buy the best you can afford and have a workflow that fits into your budget. The HVX200 is an excellent choice in this price range as of today. But of course it’s up to you to research what else is out there. Only you know what you need and what you have to spend.

There’s no time like the present! (I just took delivery of an HVX200 this wednesday) In spite of what comes down the pipe in the next year or two or three for that matter, it’s a great little camera and it will be usefull for many years.

The only thing that is in the crystal ball that people are comparing to the HVX200 is Sony’s PMW-EX1. It’s a proprietary format (XDCAM) though, so not so versatile and it will cost more when it is available. It captures higher resolution albeit useing cmos chips which are much easier and cheaper to manufacture. Sony is describing them as “reworked” so perhaps they have made some improvments on the noise levels inherant with cmos chips. Speaking of Red (who also is using cmos technology mind you, super 35 size!), if we wait long enough, I predict we will see a “Kieslowski” trilogy (in reverse) where in they will release a “White” which will have 3 chips followed by a “Blue” which will be 70mm 3 chip IMAX format.
The point is if you wait long enough you will never buy a camera. You should buy a camera like the HVX200 a month before you need it so you can become familiar with it and be competent with it in the chaos of a work enviroment.
