  • Is this a camera audio problem?

Posted by Paul Gregory on May 22, 2011 at 7:26 am

I have only had a HD camcorder for a few months a Sony XR550. One thing that I have noticed is since I have started editing it’s footage on Vegas pro 10 is that the bottom audio track always shows higher peaks that the top one.

This suggests to me that there might be something wrong with its audio recording ability.

Do you agree or could it be something to do with the fact that the camera records in 5.1 yet I’m editing in stereo?

    Thanks in advance

Try setting your project settings/ audio to 5.1 and drop the video on the time line. you’ll se 3 stereo tracks with all 6 tracks from dolby surround. See if your front left and right are the same level.

What Danny suggested will get you 5.1 Surround but if you just want the two stereo tracks to be equal you need to switch streams.

Just right-click on the event and select Stream | Stream 2. I don’t know why the first stream is unbalanced like that but it happens with footage from my Sony CX12 too.

I had the same problem (Vegas downmix issue) with my Sony CX12. Verify you don’t have a camera problem as John suggested but make sure you set the the project audio properties to 5.1 surround so you can see all the audio channels. The CX12 has the option to record the audio is stereo which avoids the whole downmix issue. If you don’t need the 5.1 check to see if your camera has the stereo option.
