So here’s one that’s been bothering me for a while, but it’s a little hard to describe. When I was working on an Avid, I often would set an “in” and an “out” on my timeline, and just an “in” on my source. But, on an Avid, when you then hit the “go to out” button on the source side, it jumps ahead to the frame that _would be_ the out-frame on your source material. This is extremely useful for determining if your shot is long enough for your needs before you cut it into a sequence. Or determining if the action you’re looking for is going to happen before the cut happens.

Is there a quick way to do this in FCP? I find myself missing this feature more than I would have expected. Sure, you can just make the edit and undo, but that’s a couple more steps than hitting the “go to out” button and making your adjustments beforehand.

(Also, while I’m posting, is there a way to set a “render completed” alarm? That would be handy, too, for instances when I wander away from my desk during rendering.)

Thanks, and I’ll probably see some of you next week after MacWorld.

set the in and out on your timeline, load the clip in question, then in the canvas window, from the middle of the three pill-shaped windows, drag down and select gang. now, when you go to the out point (or anyother point on your timeline for that matter) the source window will reflect the corresponding spot.
