Is there such a thing as too much RAM?
Posted by Travis Turner on August 25, 2005 at 2:48 pmI’m working on a dual 1Ghz apple G4 with 1.5 GB RAM and I’m working on a project that is really making my computer drag – I was wondering if AE has a RAM cap or if buying more RAM would help speed up my render times –

August 25, 2005 at 3:06 pmI have 8 gigs and I my system rips through enormous 3-D files, so I’d say you can never have too much.

August 25, 2005 at 3:18 pmSince osX 10.4, the Os can access and distribute 8GB of ram (the max you can put in there) over the different running processes.
But any individual App can only access 2GB.
So no matter how much Ram you get, After effects only uses 2Gb.
I’ve got 8Gb, and that’s a good thing when I’m running a lot of powerhouse apps that are hogging minimum of 1Gig.Photoshop, Final Cut Pro, Logic, Illustrator, CInema 4D and After Effects running, and all of the sudden, tyhat big green Pie in the Activity Monitor Ram usage dissappears 😉

August 26, 2005 at 1:27 pmYes. 2 GB.
It will change when Adobe recodes AE for the new 64-bit Operating Systems. It’s bound to happen sometime — when, I don’t know.
