  • Is there “Screen Safe” in HD?

Posted by Bill Thomas on January 10, 2008 at 2:38 pm

After many years of worrying about editing with title-safe and screen safe areas in 4:3 tv, now I’m in 16:9 HD and was wondering if there’s an actual screen-safe and title-safe area to worry about.

I had always assumed that screen-safe was because of the old CRTs that physically couldn’t show the full picture to the edge. But how does that work with the new LCDs and Plasmas that are pixel perfect right up to the edge?

Or was it an NTSC thing, or a broadcast thing?

    Any info would be appreciated!!

For all network programming, we still have to follow Title Safe guidelines for each network.

Some of the networks require us to stay within 4:3 title safe even in HD so they can simulcast the same master in SD.

same is true over this side of the pond also.

The broadcasters still want people with crt’s in 4:3 and 16:9 as well as those with newer technology to be able to receive the signal, so all my text has to fit within 4:3 safe areas, even though they are all transmitted in 16:9 only.
