  • Is there ‘lossless codec’ in Vegas 6?

Can someone tell me if there is an encoding option of using a ‘lossless codec’ like in Avid or a ‘same as source’ codec – in Vegas 6 or the recent version of Vegas.

    Yes.
You can render uncompressed, that’s absolutely losless.
If you want some compression, but it must be losless, google for huffyuv, it’s a losless codec.

In theory DV is not losless, but Vegas handles it in a way, so that it is practically losless. If you re-render a video, the untouched frames are just copied, and only the altered frames are really rendered (where you applied some effects, transitions, etc.).

I’m unaware of a “same as source” option in Vegas – I would say there isn’t any, but I may miss something…

Where do I select this option? I see uncompressed Audio but i don’t see uncompressed Video.

    File/Render As…
    Choose filetype AVI.

    There’s a default template (uncompressed).

Press “custom” and check the settings wether they’re OK for you (audio settings, rendering quality, etc…)

I hear that Cineform.com is okay for lossless codec.

Correction: That was the first impression I got of Cineform. I’m not certain if whether Cineform allows for minimal compression at render, or if it is only used for streamlining formats for minimal compression at capture for the timeline.

Cineform is described as “virtually lossless” and it is. I’ve done several rerender without noticeable change. The higher the product of theirs you are using, the more renders you can do.
