  • Is there any scene detect filter for PPro?

I know that you can use the scene detect feature when you capture DV-material shot with a DV-camera but is there a filter to split a longer avi file based on the content (e.g. if you have transferred material from a Hi8 camera to a DV-tape where there are no markers from the cameras rec on/off)?
I used to have a pinnacle capturing card with such a filter for Premiere 6.5 but that card is outdated and does not work with PPro. Searching the forum on this topic gave a recommendation to a software calle ScenalyzerLive but my question is, is there a way to do this in PPro? It seems like a very useful filter that should be included.

There isn’t any way to my knowledge to do this inside PPro.

It would have to sense sufficient pixel changes to signify a camera roll stop/start…but if you’re doing a million takes of a talking head on-camera person, the pixel changes may not be significant…

I’ve never used Scenalyzer myself so I don’t know how it actually “senses” the scene changes. It may very well work this way though as I know a very common workflow with Scenalyzer is to capture an entire tape and break it afterward.

Scenalyzer Live only works with DV inputs, but if the source is analogue via a converter/passthrough then lack of date/time for scene detect can be overcome by switching to optical scene detection instead.

Try before buy (watermarked captures) from http://www.scenalyzer.com. Get the v4 beta, which is very stable and has many more useful features than the original release.

Thanks for the input to Tim and David.

Too bad there is no way to do this inside PPro. Seems like a fairly simple function to implement since its been around for a while. I know its not perfect (the one I used in P 6.5 gave a lot of “false” detections when there was too much motion in the movie) but it was so useful that you easily forgive those shortcomings. Maybe I should get that old card running just to split some large clips.

The original version of Scenalyzer split clips that already had been captured using optical scene detection. It is still available as a free download from scenalyzer.com. Might be worth a try for you.

BTW, the Pinnacle DV500 included a scene-splitter filter with the v4 drivers, but this is not portable from 6.x to PPro. So the technology is well understood, but apparently in the wrong camp.

    Hi David
The Pinnacle DV500 card is exactly the card I have been using with Premiere 6.5 and is the card I referred to in my posts. Since the scene detect was implemented in this fairly cheap card I thought it would for sure be found in more sophisticated software as PPro but obviously not.

    Thanks anyhow
