is there any adjustment Layer or Filler
Posted by Cem Yildirim on March 26, 2008 at 2:25 pmI wonder is there any adjustment layer in FCP like in After effects, when you apply an effect to it, it applies all the layers beneath it. Or like “filler” in Avid…I know about nesting in FCP. But nesting is kind of pre-composing. Thanks for your help

You can easily apply filters to nests to achieve the same thing. Not a feature I’ve missed in my work.

March 26, 2008 at 7:05 pmFCP works differently. It never pre-processed the video, which is what your system requires. FCP always processes the image from the original media file, which is a much better way to do it maintain image quality, especially when using compressed formats.
All the best,

I don’t think it’s the same thing, when you nest items and apply an effect to it, you loose control of individual parameters of individual clips. I know you can always make cuts to achieve this. But would it not be an extra work. For instance, adding letter box effect to all clips, if you nest it how are you gonna re-arrange some of clips frame off-set, without double clicking the nested clip to open the original sequence, which is again an extra job, not mentioning you do not see the letter box effect and guessing how much to adjust frame off-set.

Avid is not my system…My system is FCP for years. Avid is more popular in the industry I work, so I have to work with it from time to time and I discover some advantages in Avid, which I wished FCP had them. But,still FCP has more advantages over Avid.

Yep, both systems can do things the other cannot. The one to use depends on what your exact needs are.
In lieu of adjustment layers, just nest and apply the filters.

April 16, 2011 at 11:32 pmI don’t know if this has been posted before, or if it’s common knowledge, but i just figured out that if you want to apply one effect to a whole sequence, like a sepia, it’s easier to edit the sequence first with no effects, then drag the first sequence icon from the Browser into a new sequence, right click>show in viewer, and then apply the effect.

i put all clips in a sequence
put that sequence in a new sequence, then selected that seq. went to video filters/ levels…nothing happened.not filter came into the viewer
