Is there a way to fast forward more than 4x?

If you’re using Vegas Pro, add a velocity envelope for 3X the speed for a total of 12X. Render and repeat as necessary.

I think I need to go faster than 12x. But if that’s the only way (losing quality and time) then it’ll have to do.

If you’re using DV-AVI footage, the encoder in Vegas is very good so you won’t lose much quality.
There is another way that I forgot about and that’s to use a nested veg.
If there’s more than one clip on the timeline, copy if to a new instance of Vegas and get the 12X increase done.
Save this as a project (eg. speed-1.veg), close and start a new instance again, import speed-1.veg, repeat the 12X method and save this one as speed-2.veg.
Save and repeat again as needed.
Because you’re using a veg file instead of rendering, there will be no quality hit at all.

This works perfectly. Thank you very much! I also found that disabling resample on fast forwarded clips (right click/properties) cut down a huge amount of rendering time (more than 70%). Just sharing as it might help someone else.

Hi, I am a vegas pro 9 noob… I am having some problems with replicating what you have stated in this forum, specifically the envelop/velocity process…

Source file is 12 minutes, I want to speed it up to 1 minute..When I cntrl-lick on stretch all the way to the left, I get a 3 minute file or so… I then add a velocity envelope, thrust it up words to 300% and the file is still 3 minutes, I get no difference when using velocity

If you could, lay out a step by step process for a noob explaining how to make a 12 minute file, 1 minute it would greatly be appreciated!

riz, after adding the Velocity envelope at 300%, the event is now in loop mode 3X.
You need to drag it backwards until you find the end of the first loop point.
This is shown as a small dip (looks like a V) at the top of the track.
It’s very hard to see when you have a Velocity envelop line cluttering things up but it is there and you should see it “snap” as it hits that point.
4X + 3X = 12X so your 12 min. video is no 1 minute.

Hi Mike, thank you for your response but man, I am pulling my hair out on this one! lol… ok, here is exactly what I am doing (wrong) and please tell me where I am just.not.getting.it!

1)import 12min mp4 file and add to timeline
2)one in timeline, right-click in blank part of timeline and select velocity envelope
3)now added to time is a green line in middle, drag upwards to where it reads “velocity at 12min is 300%”
4)goto right side of clip, control-left click until a box, with dual arrows and a squiggly line underneath it appears and drag as far left as it will go (which only goes to 3minutes and stops!)
5)render clip and it is 3minutes long 🙁

So, what am I missing lol!

riz, what you’re missing is what I’ll call step 3A.
Before you Ctrl+Drag, do the “shorten the clip to it’s new length” procedure I mentioned above.
Once you do this, everything will fall into place.

Mike, thank you so much, finally ‘get it’ 🙂 My next q if you would indulge me, would to explain in greater detail how to take a 120 minute shot and make it 1 minute as well. You explained the usage of a nested veg but I don’t quite understand the process…

So, i take my 120minute file and speed it up 12x… which mean its a 10 minute file now… If i re encode (i am encoding 1080pwmv files at 10mb bit rate) that file I imagine it will just be twice as lossy but you mentioned a way to not lose any more quality?

Anyways, that is what I want to do, you detailed explanation is totally appreciated 🙂

drop the veg file of the 12x sped up project on to the timeline of a new project and apply a further 12 x increase etc etc
