    Hi there

Ok i figured posting this in AE forum would be better than PS forum as they may not know the roughen edges effect. basically ive been playing with the roughen edges effect in AE and you can get some really nice subtle effects, but ive never seen anything like this in photoshop.

Itd be really handy to have something like that in photoshop when working with illustrations. I know i could bring a psd into AE and then add the roughen edges to it, but seems like quite a long windy way about it….

Any help would be much appreciated,

    Thanks!

ripple is pretty close, but you have rather limited control over the distortion wave size (small, medium, large).

wave is almost the opposite, it gives too many controls, and is rather hard to work with when you are just looking to roughen edges.

zigzag will work on edges, but the edge effect is not the same as roughen edges…

You can get something similar to Roughen Edges in photoshop using the following steps:

    1. Ctrl click on your target layer to make a selection

    2. Go to Select> Modify> Contract, and shrink the selection by a few pixels

    3. Alt click on the Create Layer Mask icon to mask your selection, and Ctrl+I to invert the new mask

    4. Go to Filter> Distort> Ripple to distort the mask

    5. Then try Filter> Brush Strokes> Accented Edges to distress the mask. Just be sure to make the Edge Width the same value as the selection contraction from step two.

(And yes, I’m aware this question is from five years ago…but it’s the first thing that came up in google for Roughen Edges in Photoshop)
